Why the LGBT community fights for the right to Marriage vs. Civil Unions vs. Domestic Partnership

I don't believe that God will judge you on who you love, but if you loved enough.
From the outside looking in one would think that if the LGBT community has the right it Civil Unions that their struggle for equality would be over. If that were only true. There are tremendous differences between "Marriage" and "Civil Unions" that have nothing to do with religion but all to do with the legal ramifications and government discrimination suffered. Marriage is not just about love and commitment but about the "legal status" recognized by the Federal and State government but even insurance companies, hospitals, etc. This "status" which offers rights and privileges to legally married couples is not shared by the "Civil Union" umbrella. In short, marriage offers couples rights that are not attainable to couples that are joined by Civil Unions.

The other issue is that people associate the word "marriage" as something holy. If marriage is strictly a "holy union" blessed by God then why can individuals get married at a court by the justice of the peace, by a pilot, a captain of a ship or even "Elvis" in Las Vegas??  America is made up of many religions. A religion by definition may also be Athiest or Agnostic. We have Muslims, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu's ALL make up America. Then there are different sects to each. Mormonism is part of Christianity and they once defined marriage as being plural (some still do). So to shove "one man one woman" down our throats as Christian is not true. There were several sects of Christianity that allowed plural marriages, including Jewish. All arguments against gay marriage are biblical in nature but our country is a country of many religions, NONE of which should deny someones rights to practice, but also of which no religion should infer with government. Marriage is a word used in the bible, however it was also a term used before by other religions. Therefore, the term marriage is not specific to any one religion. If the term marriage is not specific to one religion but is a term used to define a social status in which our laws allow two people certain rights towards one another then in no way should a religion influence our government from allowing any humans from these rights because of any ONE religion.

In God's eyes all sins are equal. So if marriage is strictly a holy matrimony and blessed by God then every divorce (other than the few exceptions actually listed in the Bible) results in a sinner. Your sin is no greater than the sins you feel surround homosexuality.

We did it!
